Ledger Nano S
Ledger Nano S
What makes the Ledger Nano S stand out?
One of the lowest prices among all the hardware wallets [only 60 EUR (66 USD) including FREE shipping to many countries] and ease of use with only two buttons. Truly anyone can handle using the Ledger Nano S, even those with no experience; that’s why this cryptocurrency wallet is great for all users.
The fact that it supports over 1,100 cryptocurrencies and tokens is a big plus. Another advantage is that it can safely store private keys to the lesser-known cryptocurrencies in your portfolio as well.
In addition, it is the only hardware wallet which holds a security certificate from the National Cybersecurity Agency of France.
Therefore Ledger Nano S is the best selling hardware wallet all over the world.
How does Ledger Nano S work?
Ledger Nano S stores encrypted private keys to your cryptocurrencies. The security of the hardware is ensured by a dedicated security chip resistant to sophisticated attacks and a specially developed operating system BOLOS. Transactions are confirmed on the device by entering a PIN number which is known only by you. So no one else can make transactions instead of you.
4-8 digit PIN for your authentication
When you switch on your Ledger Nano S for the first time, you will have to select and enter your personal 4 to 8 digit PIN number. If you carry your wallet around more often, we recommend to select an 8-digit PIN number). PIN number you will use for authentication whenever you use your wallet (when connecting it to a PC or a mobile phone, to the Ledger Live application, and when confirming outgoing transactions).
If you lose your wallet, you don’t have to worry that someone else might be manually confirming transactions. The wallet locks itself if the PIN number is entered incorrectly three times, which makes it practically impossible for someone to misuse your wallet in case of loss or theft.
And most importantly, you can whenever restore the content of the Ledger Nano S (the contents meaning the stored private keys) by using the recovery sequence of 24 words.
24 words for recovering stored cryptocurrencies in case of loss or theft
If you enter the PIN incorrectly three times or your wallet gets lost, damaged, or stolen, all you have to do is purchase any model of Ledger cryptocurrency wallet and recover the contents of the lost wallet by using a recovery sequence of 24 words, the so-called “recovery phrase“. This sequence is unique to every wallet. It is generated when you activate your wallet for the first time. You have to carefully write recovery phrase down and always store it separately from the wallet itself. The recovery sequence is primarily written down on a card which is included in the package with the wallet.
Since the wallet‘s recovery sequence is very important, we recommend storing it on Cryptosteel – an indestructible, offline steel backup method for saving the recovery sequence or other types of information of up to 96 symbols. If you use Cryptosteel, you never have to worry that your writing might fade from the sheet or that the paper will get damp and render the reinstating sequence unreadable.
Wide range of supported cryptocurrencies and tokens
The hardware wallet Ledger Nano S supports both the most prominent cryptocurrencies. For example Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar Lumens, Litecoin, Monero, Zcash, Dash, Tron, as well as many others. Overall, more than 1,100 cryptocurrencies and tokens. A complete list you can find on the manufacturer‘s website.
Application Ledger Live for cryptocurrency and token management
Users manage their cryptocurrencies and carry out transactions via the Ledger Live application, either on a PC or a mobile phone after connecting the wallet to it by a USB cable. You will simply download the application from the manufacturer’s website (see page with Ledger Live) and install it. The first image shows what the Ledger Live application’s user interface looks like.
How to start with Nano S and Live app?
You will need to load a small application for each cryptocurrency and token onto the wallet to allow it to store your private keys (and generate receiving addresses). It is because each cryptocurrency or token is built on a more or less different solution. Installation takes place via the Ledger Live application which you will download from the manufacturer’s official website. You can have up to 18 applications at the same time (according to the manufacturer), though in reality it’s typically fewer than that (some applications take up more space, some applications take up less, so it depends on the combination). But, more importantly, nothing is stopping your from deleting these applications and loading new applications instead if you run out of space and want to store private keys to other cryptocurrencies or tokens. Private keys remain securely stored, despite deleting the application for their operation.
Sometimes you will need to use external compatible wallets
Certain cryptocurrencies do not need the Ledger Live for transactions after you load their applications onto the wallet. You can (you must) manage them on a user interface (for example, Cardano via the user interface https://adalite.io). This can actually be an advantage if you want to use the wallet and you don’t have the option to install the Ledger Live application on a PC.
